Countertops are very personal. Traditionally people have chosen natural stone or granite countertops or their beauty and durability, but today quartz, offers similar beauty and durability plus lower maintenance has become one of the most popular countertop choices for kitchens and bathrooms.
Granite and quartz look similar but they are very different materials. Granite is a natural stone that is mined from the earth, polished into slabs, and then cut into pieces for your kitchen or bath countertop installation. Quartz, on the other hand, is an engineered stone. It consists of 93% natural quartz, one of the hardest materials on earth, combined with pigments and binders.
Because quartz is an engineered stone, quartz countertops have several important advantages over granite countertops.
Consistency
Like all natural stone, granite has natural variations in color and pattern and no two granite slabs look the same. To pick the countertop for your kitchen and bath, you may have to visit a granite yard and pick the specific slab for your project. Meanwhile, quartz countertops can be manufactured to look like granite, natural stone, or marble countertops. Because it is engineered, it can have a much more consistent appearance and it is, therefore, easier to get just the color and pattern you desire.
Staining and Maintenance
Granite is a porous stone that can absorb liquids and food and become stained or hold bacteria. To reduce the risk of this happening, granite needs to be sealed regularly with a chemical treatment. Quartz, however, is nonporous and nonabsorbent, so it resists stains, mold, and bacteria without the need for regular sealing. It can be easily cleaned with just soap and water.
Strength and Durability
In any natural stone, such as granite, there are fissures that can develop into cracks or chips. Quartz is not only a harder material than granite, but, as an engineered stone, quartz does not have fissures and, therefore, does not crack or chip as easily as natural stone.
Color and Pattern Choices
While granite and quartz both offer stunning looks for your kitchen and bath beautiful countertops, quartz gives you even more color and pattern choices to find just the look you want. Quartz is often made to look like granite, travertine, marble, concrete and other natural stones, but it is also manufactured with unique designs and almost any color you want. In addition, quartz manufacturers continue to innovate their designs and now offer even more choices, including patterns with metallic elements that give you a modern and unique design.
Longer Warranties
Many quartz countertops come with lifetime warranties because they are so durable.

I was most impressed by how quickly Kitchen Mart was able to reface our kitchen. They stuck to their calendar perfectly and our main contractor, Marcus was phenomenal. He stayed until past 6pm two days in a row to ensure he stayed on schedule. When small things didn’t go perfectly, they fixed them right away and were great with communicating to us throughout.
Kitchen Mart refaced our kitchen cabinets, The work included the refacing, new cupboard doors and drawers and pullouts inside our cupboards. Kitchen Mart discussed all of the steps in the process keeping us up to date on the schedule. Everyone we dealt with in the office was very helpful. Mike, the project manager was very helpful discussing all of the steps in the actual work, making suggestions and helping us decide on design and pullouts and hardware. Chom was the person who did the work of taking off all of the old refacing and drawers and doors and installing all of the new materials. He explained each step as he went on. He cleaned up each day making sure we could use our sink and cooktop until it was time for them to be replaced. He also made sure we had room in the garage to put the car in at night. We are very happy with our new kitchen.
